Today on June 5, 2020 at 10.00 a.m in Taifa Hall marked the event of swearing in of Professor S.G Kiama as the eighth Vice -Chancellor. Present during the occasion was the chancellor Doctor Vijoo Rattansi, the Chair of the Council Professor Julia Ojiambo, members of the council, the Deputy Vice Chancellors and the former Vice -Chancellors of the University of Nairobi. The event was held virtually due to covid 19 pandemic but still remained to be a cheerful event with congratulatory speeches from members of staff . The event had been set to take place way before the announcement of the first covid 19 case in the country and due to unavoidable circumstances it had to be postponed to today. Members of staff have already started seeing the results of Prof. Kiama's leadership and many remain hopeful that he can restore the University of Nairobi back to its heights of excellence.
Soon after the University closed, the now V.C, insisted that learning should continue through the introduction of online teaching and learning which many of the students and staff are now appreciating. Other members of staff have also been more enabled to work from their homes during the pandemic, as he mentioned in his speech today. He noted of the challenges that the Universities have been experiencing during this time of the pandemic but assured with optimism that very soon things will go back to normal.
