The University of Nairobi Vice - Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama today Friday June 12, 2020 at 3.00 p.m addressed the staff, students and University of Nairobi stakeholders. In his speech he started by thanking all the members of staff and students. He noted that since the University started online teaching and learning, he has not received any complaints from the students or staff, just to prove that every thing has been going on smoothly.
He appreciated the efforts of the Cabinet secretary Professor Magoha and the Government which has been working closely with the University of Nairobi. He thanked his excellency the president Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta for his presidential awards to the three Doctors of the University of Nairobi for their selfless support during this time of the covid 19 pandemic. He applauded the awardees and encouraged them to continue working together with the government to help Kenyans in their profession as Doctors.
He also shared with the staff and students his new appointments of Professor Enos Njeru as the Deputy Vice Chancellor Human Resource and Administration, Professor Margaret Hutchinson as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Finance, Planning and Development, Professor Mohammed Jama as the Principal College of Humanities and Social sciences, Professor Attiya Warris former Director Research and Enterprises as Deputy Principal College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Mr. Johnson Kinyua for career services Director as the new Dean of Students.
He recapitulated that the University has appointed a committee on Occupational safety and health on covid 19 preparedness headed by Professor Were to put in place safety measures so that when the university reopens, the students, staff and stakeholders will be able to operate in a safe and conducive environment without fear of contracting the virus. The committee will be updating the management on the strategies that need to be observed and ensure that they work closely with the health officers to comply. He also hinted that the normal operations may resume immediately the healthy and occupational strategies are implemented and that the university is working tirelessly to ensure that the students, as they sit for online examinations, their stations of exam taking will be conducive. He also stated that this years graduation will take place as scheduled in September, and that the admissions of 2020/2021 academic year are ongoing considering that the University received about 5,000 students who sat the KCSE November 2019. As a parting shot, he thanked all the members and wished them God's blessing.
