VICE -CHANCELLOR PROF. S.G. KIAMA ONLINE ADDRESS TO UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI COMMUNITY

Today Thursday April 9, 2020 at 11.15 a.m the Vice- Chancellor Prof. S.G. Kiama addressed the staff and students on the new innovations that the university has put in place to over come the challenges caused by the Corona Virus pandemic.  In his opening remarks he thanked the university fraternity for working closely with the government in research and empowering the community on how to keep safe during this time of the Covid 19 pandemic.  He congratulated those that had been appointed by the African Union to assist in Research as they strive to look for the way possible to get the medicine for Covid 19 Virus.  He also congratulated the online service providers for ensuring that the University is able to deliver its core mandate of teaching and learning by providing various online platforms such as cloud sharing, google suite, email document viewers and webnar among others.  He reiterated that most of the faculties have put their content online and are already reaching their students.  He noted that despite all the effort put in there are a few faculties that are facing challenges of meeting the students due to incorrect email addresses, personal mobile contacts of the students and physical address of the students being the main obstacle.  Due to the mentioned challenges he urged the students to provide the current information of their contacts by filling the form that has been uploaded on the student management information system .  The students were encouraged to make use of online electronic library while at home.  The staff were encouraged to use the data bundles as the university was committed to meet the cost.    The ICT department would continue with the training of all the staff and students to ensure that online teaching and learning is fully implemented.  That Continuous Assessment Tests shall be administered online and the faculties that have been facing challenges were urged to ensure that by April 20, 2020 their materials are  online and are able to teach online.  In his parting shot he wished all members of the University happy Easter and to continue praying for those in hospitals, quarantined and the death.
